Moving in with May

Quentin doesn't know where all these boxes came from, Toby didn't have this much space in her apartment and calls out to May, "These top two are yours, where should they go?"

"Yes, someone else to do the cleaning,"

Its kind of part of his duty as squire but still lots to do.

May nods.

"I think all our hard work so far calls for a snack break. What d'you say, Q?"

May's got a very hopeful twinkle in her eyes. She's not any more eager to start unpacking than she was to start packing.

"I'm always up for a snack. We do have food unpacked and I know where the late night food places are," He's always kind of hungry.

"Awesome!"

May leads the way to the kitchen, toting her box of not-skulls.

"I should put on some coffee, too, so Toby doesn't kill us when she and Danny get back from the U-haul place."

This may be a nocturnal household, but moving in the middle of the night is a fantastic way to attract the police. And uncaffeinated Toby during daylight hours? Terrible idea.

"Not killing is always good and I think I can make some of those sandwiches he likes. Or maybe I should go and grab something more?"

Danny prefers crunch and they have good, crunchy peanut butter.

May sets her box on the counter, then gets to the important work of grinding fresh coffee beans.

"Sandwiches are fine," she says. "I think we can save the big housewarming feast for when things are slightly more settled."

"Yes, then we'll actually have plates and tables to eat on and at," He pulls out the sandwich makings, which are an odd mix and starts constructing, "Do you think Toby will want a feast?"

Its hard to imagine her celebrating anything lately.

"I think it would require a lot more socializing than Toby puts up with lately," says May. "Half the time I'm convinced she only talks to us because she can't avoid us."

Celebration is probably exactly what Toby doesn't want.

"I know, me too. It'd be better if she was angry. She's just not...,"

Quentin doesn't even know the right word and gestures with the jam covered knife then puts it down. Maybe he shouldn't have bought that strawberry jam, its kind of bloody.

"Everyone mourns differently," says May. She can sympathize; she has faint memories of being a mourner several times over. "And she did lose a lot all at once."

May feels echoes of Toby's losses, too, especially Gillian's. May remembers loving Toby's daughter fiercely. (And nevermind that Gillian's alive and safe; she's just as lost to Toby as Connor is.)

"But it's been almost a year. I think she knows Connor and Gillian are never coming back, but she's determined to mourn them forever."

May's grown emotional by the end, accidentally splashing water across the counter as she fills the coffeemaker. It's just that forever, for Toby, could be a really long time.

He wishes he was better at comforting, but he does come closer with a shoulder bump, hug thing,

"I know. I just don't want her to join him."

[shes_so_fetch]

"She won't," says May. "Not if I have anything to do with it. She'd better not think she's off the hook just cause I'm not really her Fetch anymore."

So what if May's continued survival doesn't depend on Toby's anymore? She's still not allowed to die anytime soon.

"I've thought about talking to her about it, but I'm trying to stay out of the way, you know?"

"I won't let her either. Yeah, but don't stay too far away, she'll miss you,"

Quentin feels he's allowed to bug Toby as she's his knight.

[shes_so_fetch]

"She can't hide from me all the time. I make the coffee," she says, pointing at the coffee machine, gurgling away.

"Jazz suggested trying to lure her out more often with shiny things." Jazz is adorable.

"Think that'd work?"

"It depends on the shiny things, but it might. Fried things might work too. She does really love fast food,"

The coffee is all powerful.

It's probably going to take more than some Inn-n-Out to get Toby out of her own head.

May pushes down of moment of anger at Amandine for failing to properly equip Toby for this life. Toby's mom may be sort of shit, but dwelling in the past is exactly Toby's problem. Going there too won't help May help her sister.

"What about Tybalt? Seen him around yet?"

Fighting with Tybalt might bring some spark back in Toby... it usually does. Too bad the King of Cats has been MIA.

"No, I don't like it. I mean he probably thinks he's being helpful but its not. He's good for her,"

It doesn't make any sense to him but they make each other angry and then go do things.

[shes_so_fetch]

"Hmmph."

Cagney pokes her head through the doorway, then dashes under one of the kitchen chairs.

"You!" she says, pointing at the cat. "Tell your stupid king May says he's a dumbass."

That should convey her feelings to Tybalt with subtlety and reverence.

Quentin sighs and laughs before leaning some on May, he doesn't know how she manages to have so little reverence but he appreciates it.

Its not something that he could ever get away with, "I do have Raj's number and I know that he does ask Raj about her. Not enough to visit but still."

"S'okay. He'll turn up when he wants to... I just wish that'd be sooner rather than later.

"And hey, you never know, maybe a change of scenery will help her."

New house, new lease on life?

"Me too and it might, there's no rent for her to worry about,"

No money worries are good for Toby, she has too many things to be concerned about.

"Heh, me neither."

May was paying half Toby's rent.

"What about you, Q? How're you liking the new scenery?"

He has, after all, spent most of his life living in one knowe or another, not out here in the mortal world.

"I like the neighborhood and I like having a bigger room to myself,"

Also its wonderful to be properly with Toby and May.

The neighborhood really is great, and you can't beat the walk just across the street to Dolores Park.

"Sylvester didn't give you your own room?"

Since Toby was never a page, May doesn't have any memories to draw on there.

"He did, but it was smaller though it was near the kitchens,"

The cafes are good but a useful thing about knowes is the kitchens that usually have someone in them.

"Convenient. That'll be different here, though—nobody to cook for you. You've seen the way Toby eats."

May is a much better cook than Toby (what, like it's hard?) but she's got no plans to become house chef.

"I have but I know how to do some cooking,"

Part of his job as squire is to see that Toby eats.

[shes_so_fetch]

"You can make a decent looking sandwich," says May. "D'you think Toby'll mind if we start eating without her?"

Toby's taking her good old time with that truck, and May's stomach is grumbling!
